MONT BELVIEU, TX (KTRK) — A single car crash late last night in Mont Belvieu ended with one member of a family dead and five others, including three children, in the hospital.
Police say the driver of the Ford Expedition, a man in his 30s, lost control heading north on Highway 146 near FM 1942. The SUV ran off the road, hit a culvert, then a pole and flipped at least five times.
There were three adults and three children inside the Expedition. Everyone was thrown from the vehicle. Police say they don’t think they were all wearing their seatbelts.
A 30-year-old woman died at the scene. Her 7-year-old son was brought to the Medical Center by Life Flight, along with the other two children, ages 3 and 5.
“It was just a one-vehicle, but we’re not exactly sure what the cause was, until we can complete our accident investigation, we won’t have the answer to that,” said Virgil Blasdel with the Mont Belvieu Police Department.
Police say these families are from the Baytown and Dayton areas. There was one woman in her 30s who was inside the SUV who was alert when police arrived, so she was able to give them some information about the moments before the crash.
All of the victims were brought to the Medical Center in serious condition. However, the condition of that 30-year-old male driver is improving, according to officials.
The names of the victims haven’t been released. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
