Autopsy results in the case of Devon Davis, the 2-year-old toddler who went missing Tuesday, March 27, have concluded that the official cause of death was by drowning.

Liberty County Sheriff’s Captain Rex Evans confirmed the result on Monday, April 2.

“The cause of death has been ruled drowning by the Medical Examiner’s Office,” said Evans. “Toxicology report remains pending.”

Devon was reported missing by his mother, April Davis, on Tuesday afternoon. She said she had laid down for a nap with Devon and his 15-month-old little sister, Abbygail. When she woke up, Devon was gone and the front door was open. A five-day ordeal ensued, with a massive search for the little boy.

His body was recovered from a lake near the Davis family home in the Sam Houston Lakes subdivision of Tarkington Prairie on Saturday, March 31.

Investigators said it appeared Devon wandered away, possibly to play with a neighbor’s dogs, walked down the street to a pier near the home and fell off of it.

The family was devastated by the news, but grateful for the outpouring of support by so many people.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Devon’s father, Mike Davis, on Saturday. “We want everyone to know how much we appreciate everything they’ve done.”

Evans said in a written statement on Monday, that funeral arrangements had been finalized.

“I have just left the family of Devon Davis. There will be a Visitation at Neal Funeral Home in Cleveland on Thursday, April 5, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The service will be at Cornerstone Church of Cleveland, located on Highway 105 between Cleveland and Conroe, on Friday, April 6, at 1 p.m.,” wrote Evans. “The service will be attended by Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Rangers, Texas EquuSearch, volunteer firefighters and the many others who helped in the search for Devon Davis.”

Bryan Neal, owner of Neal Funeral Home, said Cornerstone Church has stepped forward to pay for the funeral for little Devon.

“They graciously offered to take care of all the funeral expenses,” said Neal.

His obituary says Devon was born on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 in Lawrenceville, Georgia. It lists his survivors, the funeral arrangements and includes the following statement:

“The family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Rangers, All Volunteer Fire Fighters, Texas Equusearch, and the community of Tarkington and Cleveland who provided water, food and supplies.”
