When you think of a Beauty Pageant, you think of glitz and glam, lot of makeup on young girls, and skin tight, low cut gowns.  That’s not the way we do it here at ORWFD.

Our Pageant is a NATURAL Beauty Pageant.  As you can see the emphases is on Natural Beauty.  Not beauty covered up with makeup, false eyelashes and the rest.

Oh no, our girls are disqualified for wearing more than a dusting of makeup on the age appropriate girls.

Their attire is also fashion they can wear at their local church services.  Everyday, Sunday-go-to-Meeting dresses.

At ORWFD we are looking for the girl where inner beauty is more important than outer beauty.

This year’s girls really do personify this vision.  Presenting the Winners their Crowns and Sashes is Miss West Chambers County 2010 Brianna Walston.

Here are our 2011 Winners!

Tiny Miss West Chambers County is Miss Jessie Olson, 22 Months.  Jessie likes the colors yellow and pink.  Her hobbies include dancing.  She would like to grow up to be a children’s entertainer because she loves to dance and laugh.

The 2011 Junior Miss West Chambers County is Jessica Finney, 12 years old.  Jessica was a show stopper in her 70 year old Vintage Dress at the Pageant.  She really got what this was all about.  Jessica loves singing and horsebackriding.  She wants to be a veterinarian because she loves animals of all kinds!

The winner of  the 2011 Miss West Chambers County Natural Beauty Pageant was Ms. Samantha Oliver, 15 years old.  Samantha likes riding her horses, swimming, and riding intertubes.  Samantha would like to have her own horse business!  Not just any horse business, but a Horse Ranch Owner that caters to Special Needs Children.

Old River-Winfree Founders Day celebrated the success of the 3rd Annual Founders Day with an Appreciation and Presentation Awards Ceremony held at the November 14th City Council Meeting.

An Appreciation Award was presented by the President of ORWFD, Colleen Fontenot to Mayor Joe Landry and the City Council.

In 2007, when the Old River-Winfree City Government was presented with the vision of a Historic Founders Day and it was brought to a vote, it was a unanimous, “Yes!”  The City provides the behind the scenes necessities of the “Founders Day” that doesn’t get talked about or applauded, but must be provided nonetheless.  A Municipal Government that silently backs its citizens and tries to make this a better town in everything they do.

Old River-Winfree Founders Day then presented the sponsors of each event and those Chairmen that went above and beyond the call of duty with an appreciation trophy.  After that, winners from the Miss West Chambers County Natural Beauty Pageant were crowned by the 2010 Miss West Chambers County, Brianna Walston.

The Pie/Cake/Cupcake Bakeoff Grand Champion and owner of the Cinder Block in Old River-Winfree, Mrs. Ethel Ramsey, was presented with the Grand Champion Bakeoff award and roses for her contribution of scrumptious, award winning entries.

Mrs. Ramsey’s pies are a favorite of bidders at the fun-filled Pie/Cake/Cupcake Auction that follows the announcement of winners and benefits the Wounded Warrior Project and the Pfc Wesley R. Riggs Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The 2012 ORWFD is to be held on November 10.  For more information on Old River-Winfree Founders Day, visit our website at http://www.orwfoundersday.com.

The City Government of Old River-Winfree has chosen to “stand alone” in seeking and acquiring grant money funds from the Hurricane Ike Recovery.  The City has already moved forward on the Emergency Shower, Restroom, and Washateria located behind the Community Building and the Drainage Project that will much improve the drainage of our town.

The Emergency Facility for the Old River-Winfree Residents and the Drainage Project are part of what is called “Round 1“.

I drove down and took some pictures and video of the winning bidder, Rebel Contractors, and talk to Rusty Wilson, Vice President.  It sure looked like they knew what they were doing to an untrained eye.  I captured a video for you to see the skill it takes to operate this machinery.

To qualify for grant monies left in the fund, in what is called  Round 2 of the Government Land Office Grant, a Resolution by the City Council has to be signed and on file by December.

Mayor Joe Landry has issued a “Call Meeting” of the City Council. (Round 2 is separate from Round 1.  The City is trying to qualify to receive more monies to do other projects around town).  The County and those towns who chose to join with them will also be vying for these funds as you can see on the Commissioners Court Agenda previously posted.

The City Council will vote on this Resolution at the meeting set on November 30, 2011 at City Hall at 6:30 p.m.  A Town Hall Meeting will be held prior to the Council Meeting to get your input at 6:00 p.m..  All Old River-Winfree residents are welcome to attend.

If you want some of the FINE Texas Top Soil, just call Rusty on his cellphone at 713-724-6121 and leave a message.   They are heading up to Danny Lane with this portion of the project.

Winter Season Safety

As the weather is getting colder, heaters are starting to be used and Christmas trees may soon be put up.  The attached video show how quickly an actual tree can go up in flames and consume your home with smoke and flame.  Obviously, artificial trees that are non-combustible are more safe, but there is nothing like the smell of a real tree, right?  Just remember, keep ignition sources away from that real tree!  Also, plug those portable heaters directly into the wall.  Don’t plug them into power-strips or extension cords, AND keep the heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that might burn, like chairs, blankets, etc.

Concerning heaters – if you have any type of gas heaters or appliances in your home, including gas hot water heaters, gas furnaces, etc., I strongly recommend getting a carbon monoxide detector.  This odorless gas can kill an entire family while they sleep, and a conventional smoke detector will not pick it up.  Here is a link to an example, because it is a combination smoke detector AND carbon monoxide detector:

http://www.target.com/p/First-Alert-Talking-Combination-Carbon-Monoxide-Smoke-Alarm-SCO7CN-2/-/A-11134894?reco=Rec_pdp_11134894_ClickCP_Adjacency

I recently bought a new one (smoke detectors should be replaced at least every 10 years).  Target and Wal-Mart had a good selection, and they also have good selections at places like Home Depot and Lowe’s.  The bottom line here is don’t be cheap, get a good one.  These devices can and will save your life.

Believe it or not, in the U.S., 10,000 people per year suffer injuries from carbon monoxide, and 1,500 people per year DIE from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Slight risk of severe tstms across SE Texas today from late morning to late afternoon.  Main threat damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.

Monday, November 14, 2011  •  Austin, Texas  •  Press Release

Gov. Rick Perry today issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to hear a case relating to Obamacare:

“The Supreme Court’s decision to hear this case quickly is encouraging news for Texas, which faces massive cost explosions under Obamacare, and for Americans everywhere who don’t want the federal government forcing them to buy specific goods and services. I’m hopeful the Supreme Court will confirm what other federal courts have already recognized: that Obamacare is an unprecedented overreach and an unconstitutional infringement upon individual liberties.”

Texas and 25 other states have challenged the constitutionality of Congress’ authority to force individuals to buy health insurance. This administration continues to spend excessively and impose unfunded mandates upon the states, including this federal health care reform bill that will cost Texas taxpayers more than $27 billion over 10 years for the Medicaid expansion starting in 2014.

The founders of the republic stressed early and often the federal government’s national security responsibility. The role of the government to “provide for the common defence” is identified in the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution as imperative to the formation of “a more perfect Union.” This clause is the antecedent to several how-to constitutional provisions on national defense.

Veterans, the men and women who serve and who have served in the U.S. armed forces, embody this commitment every day. In this historical context, motorists may notice along Liberty’s Highway 146 Bypass the posting of green and white signs that accordingly honor veterans every day.

The City of Liberty, Liberty County and the Texas Department of Transportation, with the support of the Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, teamed to designate the thoroughfare, between Highway 90 and Loop 227, as Veterans Memorial Highway.

The highway’s addresses remain. The only change is a salient roadside reminder of those who sacrifice for their comrades, families, community, state and nation.

Operating a ladder truck, TxDOT sign technician Jacob Lewis, a Marine Corps veteran who served three tours in Iraq, removed the tarp from each sign Nov. 9 as a formal ceremony at Cornerstone Church took place.

“As I have said many times, we can’t do enough to fully honor and properly recognize all that the veterans have done for us in the past and are currently doing,” Liberty Mayor Carl Pickett said, prior to signing the proclamation. “Their sacrifice to the United States and to us as citizens is enormous. We need to recognize it more and more every day, and show our appreciation for what they have done for us.”

Retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Charles E. Grabein, commander of Dayton-based American Legion Post 512, attended the dedication wearing the dress blue uniform. He praised the tribute and said it was long overdue.

“It’s great and it should have been done a long time ago because veterans are what caused it to be able to happen,” Grabein said, alluding to the immutable tradition of the American citizen-soldier. “If we didn’t have veterans, we wouldn’t have a country, so there wouldn’t be a road to be named Veterans Memorial Highway.”

The partnership spent more than a year pursuing the highway’s formal designation, according to Liberty County’s point man, Veterans Service Officer Richard Ayers. The Marine Corps veteran pointed out that the new signs transmit a sense of gratitude to the honorees, regardless of the era in which they served.

“It is a magnificent thing to see something done that veterans can identify,” Ayers said, adding that the highway’s new signs bestow a nice touch to each service member’s homecoming. “When they left, they didn’t see them, but now that they are here they can see the name on the signs. That’s a great feeling to have.”

Fined are two stores in Old River-Winfree for selling to minors.

They are Dillon’s Liquor Store, which is not new to this offense, and the new Old River Chevron on the corner of FM 565 and FM 1409.

Dwight’s Discount Liquor and Sam’s Express #2 Exxon Station have a pristene record.

Where are you going to spend your money?  Someone who sells liquor to your kids or someone who never will.  You decide!  It’s your teenagers and your money!

MONT BELVIEU – Authorities are still unsure exactly why a machete-wielding Old River-Winfree man rammed one of their police cars last week — inflicting $3,000 worth of damage.

Mont Belvieu Police Chief Virgil Blasdel doubts there are any easy answers.

“The young man has some issues,” the chief said. “There’s more going on here than anger.”

Trevino, 34, pulled into the Mont Belvieu Police Department’s parking lot driving a green Ford Ranger truck about 2 p.m. Thursday. He then, inexplicably, rammed an empty, unmarked, detectives vehicle.

Trevino drove away. He was later spotted by a Chambers County Sheriff’s deputy, who attempted to stop him as he pulled into a mobile home park in the 12700 block of FM 1409.

Trevino jumped out of his truck, brandishing a machete that was so new it still had store price tags on it. He told the deputy he would have to “shoot him” to capture him.

The deputy talked Trevino into laying his weapon down. Trevino was arrested and placed in Chambers County Jail.

The chief said he tried speaking to Trevino at the scene and the suspect didn’t respond at all.

So Mont Belvieu authorities tried again to speak to him on Friday to find out why he rammed the Mont Belvieu police car.

“He didn’t remember anything – he didn’t even remember hitting the police car,” Blasdel said. “So I don’t think his actions are a reaction to anything.”

For his own safety, Trevino was placed under observation at the jail, the chief said.

Mont Belvieu authorities have filed a criminal mischief charge against Trevino. The charge was aggravated to the state jail felony level because of the amount of damage inflicted on the car.

Trevino is being charged by Chambers County with fleeing and attempted aggravated assault of a peace officer, according to Lesa Hegman, Mont Belvieu police administrative assistant.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is filing a driving while license is invalid charge, and the Mont Belvieu Police Department is filing a felony criminal mischief charge.

During the collision, there was another vehicle parked next to the detective’s car that was occupied by a dispatcher that was sitting in her vehicle getting ready to leave.

But the woman was neither struck nor injured, authorities said
